Loving what you do

One of my clients said to me recently that it was a very special thing to love what you do.  In all sincerity I can truly say that I love the job that I’ve created over the last eight years.  I love teaching  yoga and helping people feel much better with massage.  I love the rich conversations that develop during positive psychology coaching sessions.  I cherish the team of therapists that work at Breathe London and the wonderful support we get from staff at the Colombo centre.  And I love to see our clients, many of whom have become good friends.

Eight years ago when we set up this business we were looking for a fresh challenge. I also wanted to experience what the Buddhists call Right Livelihood ie that my job not only supports me financially and enables me to grow as a person but also enable me to give back to society. I left the world of corporate finance at KPMG eight years ago.  Prior to that I had spent some very happy years in Australia.  It was in Australia that I first became interested in massage, yoga and psychology and over the last twelve years I’ve explored these areas in order to better understand myself and enable me to become a better therapist.

Three years after we started the business we came across the Colombo centre, a not for profit sports and community centre which uses its surplus to fund community programs in South London.  I thought it was a good idea to build a business in a place that promoted wellbeing to those in society that could least afford it. It also enabled me to feel that I contributed to my local community.  Having the Breathe business at Colombo means that we bring affluent people into a community centre .  Many of our clients value us because we offer a great personal service and because we have this strong ethical element.  Some of my city hedge fund managers now practice yoga with people who have lived in the local community all their lives.  I like this mixing.

Breathe has developed as an integrated mind body practice.  We recognise that physical and emotional issues often go hand in hand and we therefore have nutrition therapy, life coaching and hypnotherapy to compliment our physical therapies.  The idea was to create a business that provided our clients with empowering tools to help our clients help themselves.

My challenge for 2012 is to get more people interested in Breathe London and understand more about our ethics and values, where we came from and how we are building an integrated wellbeing practice

Have a wonderful Christmas break and fabulous 2012

Lots of love

Andy

Social networking and Breathe London clients

Breathe-London

Last week I went to Media weeks annual convention where I sat through a whole series of talks about the do’s and don’t of social networking with clients –  how to build relationships and drum up business without seeming pushy.

One of the speakers said that if you feel the need to be moving forward in all directions all the time you are doing the right thing.  For me this feels a little at odds with running a wellbeing business which emphasises calmness and flow.

This introduces a wider issue of how we all connect with each other, whether our  increased connectivity is somehow making our connections shallower, less tactile and less human.  Buddhist and Vedic teaching would emphasise that what we choose to connect with and the manner in which we connect has a profound effect on our wellbeing.  Having all these points of connection might be a source of great energy and power for many but it can also be a powerful drain on our attention.  For some people the opportunities presented by a colourful, stimulating digital world mean that they are always urgently restless.  Unsatisfied with the present, devouring the future.

There were so many conflicting messages about how to connect properly with our clients and friends.  I was left in a confused state about how best to use Twitter, Facebook, The Breathe London wellbeing blog and Breathe mail newsletter.  In general we attempt to provide you with reliable information about wellbeing and rarely actively promote our services.  If you have any ideas please let me know!  As a general rule we are going to use this newsletter to give information on our therapists, special deals that we have and Youtube clips on how to massage/meditate/practice yoga etc

The Breathe blog has about  three or four posts each week providing general wellbeing news on psychology, hypnotherapy and physical therapies.  Breathe Facebook and Twitter will promote all of the above but if you follow us on Twitter we will also use this to promote flash sales – for example if we are quiet we will do half price massages etc

This months special deals

–          Two, one hour sessions of lymphatic drainage massage plus a one hour nutrition consultation with Jo Lewin for just £99 Detox offer

–          First session of Positive Psychology Coaching with Andy, Charlotte or Madeleine for just £40 . Find out about the interventions which science has demonstrated raise your wellbeing levels – Positive Psychology Coaching

–          First session of hypnotherapy – half price Hypnotherapy

Sports Injury? Try Acupuncture and Herbs

Many people are aware of the therapeutic benefits of deep tissue and sports massage to relieve pain and speed up the healing process and some have experienced acupuncture for the treatment of injuries and pain. However, there is a long history of treating injuries with a combination of massage, acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine.

The warring states period in China (221-207BCE) was a pretty dangerous time and Chinese generals required a medicine that was quick and easy to apply and also effective. In addition secret formulas where passed down through the years in Shaolin temples and in the Kung Fu martial arts tradition. Known as die da or hit-fall medicine a range of pre-prepared soaks, liniments, plasters and herbal powders to be drunk where developed.

Herbs such as frankincense, myrrh, angelica root, safflower and turmeric are used both internally and externally to reduce swelling, cool inflammation and reduce pain. In the Shaolin tradition herbs are also used for ligament damage, deep bruising, and to speed up the knitting of fractured bones.

Acupuncture and massage reduces inflammation, facilitates the flow of blood and lymph, increases range of movement and is effective for treating strains, sprains and myofascial pain. A range of pre-prepared herbal products in the form powders, sprays, plasters and creams are available.

Luckily for us we don’t live in the warring states period of Chinese history but we do have access to the medicine to treat sports and traumatic injures, as well as occupational injuries such as tennis elbow and repetitive strain injury to help us recover quickly and get back to being active as soon as possible.

Visit www.breathe-london.com/massage and www.breathe-london.com/waterloo-acupuncture to book a series of massage, acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine treatments to suit your needs.

Note: No animal products, minerals or endangered species are used only herbs of botanical origin that are of the highest quality, that contain no adulterants, are tested for heavy metals and contaminants are used.

Caution: Never treat yourself with herbal remedies without the guidance of a practitioner of herbal medicine.

Coming Soon: Using acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine to treat gastrointestinal disorders.

New prices and special offers for massage

In order to help promote wellbeing in the community we are introducing a smart new pricing structure. To reflect the fact that our nearest competitor charges £70 for a one hour massage we have decided to increase our prices for the first time in seven years. From the15th October a drop in 30 minute massage will be £35, a 60 minute £55 and a 90 minute £75.

However there are many times during the day when our therapists are not busy, for example between 10am and 12pm and 3pm to 5pm . From now on we will be advertising large discounts at short notice. For example, if we have capacity we will notify our customers that we have off peak availability. An example of one our offers will be as follows:

“Call the Colombo Centre on 0207 261 1658 and book a one hour sports massage today for just £30 – valid for Tuesday and Wednesday this week”

In order to notify you of these offers we will communicate via the Breathe Facebook and Twitter pages. To sign up simply click on the attached
